Cool UA - For a Sustainable Future

CoolUA is a citizen group whose mission is to encourage local officials and individuals to adopt energy efficiencies.  We are asking the city to sign unto the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, conduct a thorough audit of its energy usage, set reduction targets, and create an action plan.  More than 700 other cities nationwide have signed on and subsequently found creative and unique ways to save taxpayers money.  Last year, the City of Upper Arlington spent $714, 470 on energy consumption; a 20% reduction would result in potential savings to taxpayers of $142,000.  These savings could be realized by, among other solutions, adopting sustainable building practices, purchasing energy star equipment and appliances, retrofitting facilities with energy efficient lighting, and increasing the fuel efficiency of the municipal fleet.

At the Upper Arlington Schools, Superintendent Jeffrey Weaver and Business Director Paul Craft analyzed the district’s energy bills and decided to take action.  Energy teams are being formed at each building to educate students and staff on the humans factors that waste energy. Each team will look for ways to conserve energy and save taxpayer money.  The goal is to reduce the district’s $1,283,000 annual energy bill.  Managing energy consumption offers a unique way to realize significant savings.
